What Happened to the Chinese,
Sikhs, and Japanese in Bellingham?
Whatcom Museum, Rotunda Room, Free
Western Washington University Professor Paul
Englesberg presents a program examining Asian immigrant workers in
Bellingham history. The lumber mills, canneries, railroads, and
mines in Whatcom County created a great demand for labor and
provided jobs for hundreds of Asian workers. However, citizen and
labor movements in Bellingham (and beyond) stirred up prejudice and
fears of the "yellow peril," and called for exclusion, boycotts, and
even evictions. Some civic leaders and clergy spoke out for
protecting their rights and for tolerance, but most of the Asian
workers left in hope of finding better conditions elsewhere. Dr.
Englesberg will discuss his research on the Asian immigrants and
settlers in Whatcom County from 1880 to 1945, drawing on primary
sources including photographs, letters advertisements, editorials,
and news articles.
