Whatcom County Historical Society
The WCHS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the preservation, presentation, and promotion of Whatcom County history through public programs, special events, education, research assistance, historic preservation and publications.
The Whatcom County Historical Society was originally incorporated July 29, 1964, as the Whatcom Museum Society, Inc. "to assist Bellingham City Museum to fulfill its function of education and pleasure for residents of and visitors to this community..."
On December 13, 1965, the Museum Society amended its Articles of Incorporation to change its name to the Whatcom County Historical Society. Our articles of incorporation state:
The business and purpose of this (WCHS) Society is to bring together people interested in history, especially in the history of Whatcom County, Washington. This purpose shall be carried out by various means, which may include: disseminating historical information and arousing interest in the past by holding meetings with addresses, lectures, papers, and discussion; by marking historic buildings, sites, and trails; by publishing historical material; by establishing temporary and permanent displays which may help to illustrate and interpret the exploration, settlement, and development of the region; and by using all available forms of media to increase public awareness. The Society will not attempt to influence legislation, or participate in any political campaign.
The Whatcom County Historical Society has maintained and enjoyed a close mutually-beneficial relationship with the Whatcom Museum since its inception. For questions or information, email the webmaster or President Wes Gannaway.
